About SPICE:

Spice3f5 for BeOS

RUNNING

To run Spice, make sure that the executables 'spice3' and 'spice_plot'
are in your search path. They are located in the spice3f5/bin
directory. Also, you will need to export the following variables:

export SPICE_EXEC_DIR=$INSTALL_PATH/spice3f5/bin
export SPICE_LIB_DIR=$INSTALL_PATH/spice3f5/lib

Be sure to specify the INSTALL_PATH. To give it a try, just type
'spice3' from a terminal window.

Please feel free to modify and improve my GUI code in any way you
like. You can send feedback to wesley@idsi.net. If the demand is
great enough I may add additional features such as a plot cursor, a
resizable window, etc.

COMPILING

Very few modification were needed to the source that I downloaded. In
most cases where I changed files, I made a copy of the original file
and concatinating .orig to its name.

1) From a terminal window 'cd' to the spice3f5 directory that was
created when you unziped the archive. That is the directory that
contains this readme file.

2) Compile Spice using either the command 'util/build ppc-beos' or
'util/built x86-beos' as appropriate. The build scripts do not
support cross-compiling.

3) Install the binaries using either the command 'util/build install
ppc-beos' or 'util/build install x86-beos'. This will copy the
executable files into the spice3f5/bin directory.

CHANGES

November 23, 1997

I have done a quick-and-dirty port of Spice version 3f4 to BeOS. I
have added a very simple GUI for displaying plots. However, the main
user interface is still text based.

October 17, 1998

I have migrated Spice to BeOS R4. If an Intel-BeOS user wants to help
me with a recompile, I would be more than happy to distribute Intel
binaries as well.

April 1, 1999

I have migrated Spice to BeOS R4.1 and from version 3f4 to 3f5. This
utilmately ended up being a re-port in which I more carefully
documented the changes which I made.

- moved the following files/directories to the notes directory
3f5patches
NORM.changes.orig
dbx
internal
mac_port
manifest
porting
readme
readme.Linux
readme.Linux.orig
spice2
- deleted all *.orig files from previous ports
- created conf/ppc-beos
- modified src/bin/makedefs
- modified src/include/mfb.h
- created src/include/os_beos.h
- modified src/include/port.h
- created symbolic links in src/include to all of the *ext.h headers
in the src/lib/dev directory tree
find ../lib/ -iname "*ext.h" -exec ln -fs {} \;
- created the directory src/bin/BeOS and its contents
- modified src/lib/fte/aspice.c
- modified src/lib/fte/display.c
- modified src/lib/mfb/mfbio.c
- modified src/lib/mfb/paths.c
- modified util/build

July 19, 1999

- created conf/x86-beos

September 25, 1999

Spice now compiles and runs on both PPC and x86 platforms under BeOS
R4.5.2.
