About nVidia Driver:

Unified NVidia graphics driver for BeOS
---------------------------------------

Version 2001.07.31

This unified driver recognizes and supports the following NVidia
graphics products, in both PCI and AGP flavors (cards actually tested are
marked with an asterisk (*)):

* RIVA 128
RIVA 128ZX
RIVA TNT
* RIVA TNT2
* RIVA TNT2 Ultra
RIVA TNT2 Vanta
RIVA TNT2 M64
RIVA TNT2 Aladdin
* GeForce 256
GeForce 256 DDR
* GeForce2 MX
* GeForce2 GTS
GeForce2 Ultra
Quadro
Quadro2 MXR
Quadro2 Pro
* GeForce3

--==>> This driver will DISABLE EXISTING RIVA DRIVERS! <<==--

This new unified driver is intended to replace the existing RIVA
drivers. To avoid nasty conflicts, the old drivers need to be disabled.
The installation scripts will do this for you automatically.

This driver offers no new functionality over the existing RIVA 128
and RIVA TNT drivers (except perhaps more standard sync timings). If the
existing drivers are working for you, you don't need to install this new
driver.

Special Note for RIVA 128 Users

If you are a RIVA 128 user, you will experience lower rendering
performance compared to the original R5 driver in RGB565 (16-bit) display
modes. This is becuase the RIVA 128 chip does not officially support RGB565
modes. I was able to make it work in the R5 driver through some creative
trickery, but was unable to completely duplicate the trick for this unified
driver.

As such, if you have a RIVA 128, and are using an RGB565 display
mode, only opaque blits are accelerated (which assist in dragging windows
and scrolling their contents). Filled and inverted rectangles are not
accelerated, and are performed in software. If this is an issue for you, do
not install this driver.

If you are using any other NVidia chip, or any other display mode,
all accelerated functions operate normally.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR WINDOWS USERS
------------------------------

Based on the type of email I most often receive concerning this
driver, I am compelled to explicitly make the following statement:

If you have downloaded this file to upgrade your NVidia drivers for
Microsoft Windows, YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED THE WRONG FILE! This driver package
is intended for use with BeOS ( http://www.be.com/products/freebeos/ ), not
Windows. For the latest Windows drivers for your NVidia card, visit
NVidia's Web site:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers

But thanks for inflating our download count :-).

Installation
------------

The installation process must be performed from within BeOS. If you
are reading this file from within Windows, you must reboot into BeOS before
installation may proceed. Presumably you've already unpacked the archive,
and are reading this README file.

o Double-click on the script 'install-nvidia-driver.sh'
o A diagnostic output window will appear. Messages will appear here
indicating how installation is progressing.
o Read and follow the instructions in the dialogs that appear.
o When done reading the NVidia-README file (you don't have a choice
:-) ), close the window to continue the installation process.
o Confirm installation by clicking 'Yes' when prompted.
o Existing RIVA drivers will be disabled.
o The new unified NVidia driver will be installed.
o Reboot your system to use the new drivers.

You may safely install this driver package on top of the previous
unified NVidia driver; no special procedures are needed.

(For the technoids: Before rebooting, do an 'ls /dev/graphics'. If
you see an entry beginning with 'nv', the driver installed correctly.)

Removal
-------

To remove the unified NVidia driver and restore the old R5 drivers:

o Double-click on the script named 'remove-nvidia-driver.sh'
o A diagnostic output window will appear. Messages will appear here
indicating how removal is progressing.
o Read and follow the instructions in the dialogs that appear.
o Confirm removal by clicking 'Yes' when prompted.
o The unified NVidia driver will be *DELETED* from the system
directories. (You may use the above Installation procedure to
re-install it later.)
o The old R5 drivers will be re-activated.
o Reboot your system to complete the process.

Known Issues
------------

o No overlay support for TNT2, TNT, or RIVA 128 cards.
o Does not support digital displays.
o No accelerated 3D support. (Yes, I'm disappointed about it, too.)

Latest Version

Details about this version:
o Fixed overlay width quantization problem. Diagonal display
artifacts during movie playback are now fixed. (Poorly-behaved
apps may still exhibit problems.)
o Removed GeForce2Go recognition; too many people were reporting
nasty-sounding problems. My apologies to the user community.
(People interested in testing future attempts at GeForce2Go
support are welcome to contact the author.)
o Extra expository text in the installation scripts.
